On Tuesday, TV Line posted an interview with executive producer Gareth Neame who mentioned that the Dowager will have a "brilliant" storyline in the fifth season.

"It's Downton at its best," Neame said. "It's fantastic."

Season 5 To Have An Entirely Different Style?

The producer went on about how each episode will have some guests coming in and out. "The show is always a melting pot of the regular characters in addition to guest spots," he said.

Neame also revealed that Mary will have some challenges to face when it comes to finding a suitor now that Matthew is no longer part of the picture. Even though the audience might want her to be happy, the producer pointed out that his memory needs to be respected.

"It's about timing all those things correctly, and I really like the way we juggled two, maybe even three, suitors in the last season," Neame said. "She's still not quite sure, and I think there's a good hook for the audience in the fifth season to see which decision she's going to make."

While some might hope that Mary ends up with Tony, Neame mentioned someone else who might have a chance of becoming the lady's new man.

"He certainly seems to have the upper hand, but there are other people who prefer Charles, so we'll see...," Neame said.

Downton Abbey Season 5 is expected to premiere on Sunday, January 4 on PBS.
