Marvel Studios keeps adding characters to its cinematic world, presumably with the goal of continuing their domination of the box office, and in the future Dr. Strange is going to join the likes of Iron Man and Thor in the Marvel Universe.

Joaquin Phoenix Rumored For True Detective Season 2

While it is not certain who will eventually playing Dr. Strange, on Friday The Hollywood Reporter reported that Joaquin Phoenix is in negotiations to take on the role.

Nothing is official, but the site indicated that they are beyond merely the offer stage. While it might seem odd for an actor like Phoenix to take on a role in a comic book movie, when you consider that actors such as Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner have already done movies for Marvel, it seems less surprising.

Dr. Strange is not as big of a character as others in the world of Marvel, but neither was Iron Man, and now Robert Downey Jr. is the best paid man in Hollywood. Additionally, the story behind the character, Dr. Strange is the "Sorcerer Supreme" and protects the world against supernatural threats, seems like it could lead to a fairly exciting, inventive movie. Phoenix has appeared in films such as The Master and Her recently, and was nominated for an Oscar for playing Johnny Cash in Walk the Line.

Scott Derrickson, who up to this point has basically just directed horror movies, is attached to direct the Dr. Strange film no matter who stars in it. However, the possibility of his sensibilities combined with the strange presence Phoenix can be on screen could make this the weirdest Marvel movie yet.
