It seems like monster movie fever will continue on into 2018 with the new release date for one of this summer's top blockbusters.

Teaser For 'Godzilla 2' Features Ghidorah, Mothra, And Rodan

Legendary announced on Thursday that the sequel to this year's surprise hit, Godzilla, would be hitting theaters on June 8, 2018. It added that director Gareth Edwards is slated to return to the director's chair as well.

While a four-year wait seems like much, it most likely is accommodating Edwards since the director was announced to helm a secret spin-off of Star Wars, which is set to be released in December 2016. A 2018 Godzilla release gives the director time to do the Star Wars movie and then move onto Godzilla 2 right after it.

As for the sequel, no plot details have been released and casting is still unknown. Legendary CEO Thomas Tull revealed at the Warner Bros. Hall H panel at Comic-Con this year that Godzilla will encounter the mutated pterosaur Rodan, the moth-like Mothra, and the three-headed Ghidorah along the way.

This won't be the only monster movie coming in the next few years. Jurassic World is set to open in 2015, the King Kong prequel, Skull Island, comes in 2016 and the sequel to last year's Pacific Rim opens in 2017 with Guillermo Del Toro returning to direct.

The first Godzilla starred Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elisabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins and David Strathairn. The movie was a massive hit for Legendary after it brought in $93.2 million during its opening weekend run.
