It seems like James Gunn will be going in a different direction than the comics for the identity of Star Lord's dad in the sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy.

Which Cameo Did You Miss In 'Guardians' That Will Lead To A Sequel Apperance?

Speaking with Empire on their podcast recently, Gunn talked about introducing the character that was mentioned during the movie but never seen.

"There have been a lot of documents passed around about who Peter Quill's father is between a select two or three of us," Gunn said.

"That's been part of the plan since the beginning, that's something I had to work out before we shot the screenplay. We wanted to make sure Yondu's place in everything made sense and it does, so it's all very specific stuff. It's definitely not the character who it is in the comics, I'll say that much."

As for who it could be, HitFix named some of the facts that were illustrated from the first movie. "Quill's mother called him an 'angel,' he hired the Ravagers to abduct Peter back in 1988, his genetic code is something the Nova Corps has never encountered before, and he's a bit of an a-hole," the site said.

They went on to list the possibilities including: Major Victory, Starhawk, Odin, Eternity, and Adam Warlock.

Having Odin be the father of Star Lord would be an interesting tie-in to the rest of the Marvel universe, specifically Thor, but their personalities don't exactly align and it would make much sense. Adam Warlock is another interesting name as it has come up a lot recently as a potential character to appear in the sequel.

Either way, Gunn says he will not be following the comics when it comes to the identity of the father.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is set to open in theaters on July 28, 2017.
