Falling Skies closed out season 4 with a rather massive cliffhanger and new, mysterious alien species.

Tom Mason (Noah Wyle) was left adrift in space at the end of "Shoot the Moon," and someone other than the Volm or the Espheni came to his rescue. Unfortunately for viewers, it is unclear if this is the "common enemy" Earth's overlords warned Tom of early in season 4, or if it is somone humanity can trust.

"Well, it very well may be, but what that greater common enemy was and in what way it may play a role in season 5 is really the question, and it's certainly not an enemy in the traditional terms that we may have considered it and neither is this necessarily the answer to all our prayers," teased showrunner David Eick, according to the Examiner. "It's another mystery to kind of uncover over the course of the fifth season, but it is profound in terms of its impact on Tom's plans and on how their next move in defeating the enemy will take shape."

Who ever this mysterious entity is, however, it choose to put Tom somewhere he felt safe. The former professor awoke surrounded by all the trappings of home, eventually calmly coming face-to-face with this possible new baddie. Interestingly enough, Tom left viewers with the knowledge that his new acquaintance was - at the very least - "beautiful."
