When The CW developed The Originals as a spin-off series, The Vampire Diaries did not just lose one of its big baddies. It also lost one of the show's most talked about relationships: Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Caroline (Candice Accola).

Klaus' unrequited love for Elena's (Nina Dobrev) best friend was a compelling storyline, and when Klaus got his own show the pair were divided not just by Caroline's complicated feelings, but also by actual physical distance.

In an interview with Digital Spy on August 26, The Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder (Damon) suggested that the series, which débuted in 2009, could end with Season 6. If that's the case, then there would be an opportunity for some characters to appear more frequently on The Originals, which is still going strong as it approaches its second season.

One of the characters most talked about for such an event has been Caroline. According to Movie Pilot on Thursday, Caroline would be the most natural fit. Her chemistry with Klaus is undeniable, the pair even hooked up during The Vampire Diaries cross-over episode last season, and while Klaus has had a few romantic entanglements on The Originals, he has yet to find someone with whom he shares that intense connection. It would also help ease the blow of the network losing one of its most popular programs.

Even if Caroline doesn't become a regular, it might be easier for the actress to make a few guest appearances without the busyness of her Vampire Diaries schedule.

The Originals returns to The CW for a second season on a new night Monday, October 6 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
