The Bureau and Reddington (James Spader) came to an impasse at the end of last season, and, after their major falling out, Red will come back to an entirely new set of rules.

The protocol for how Red operates changes dramatically," Spader explained, according to The Boston Herald. "He just has to conduct his relations with the FBI in a very different manner, considering the events of last year. He's the same person, but the circumstances that he's putting himself into are certainly different than what has preceded [them]."

That said, the FBI taskforce will be up and running once more, and Cooper (Harry Lennix) will be back in charge. To facilitate this, the series will utilize a small - but significant - time jump as the premiere begins.

"We actually pick up just a few months after the events of the last season's episode," said executive producer Jon Bokenkamp, according to The Wall Street Journal. "So some time has passed... and our people have had a bit of a chance to process it. The story has progressed just a bit, so we're not picking up exactly where we left off."
