The new Batman prequel series Gotham is debuting on Fox Monday night and with it are huge expectations for fans of the 75-year-old franchise.

Gotham is centered on the titular fictional city based on New York City where villains are born and run amuck. The new series will only feature Bruce Wayne very briefly, so much of the familiarity with the characters will come from the villains as well as James Gordon (Ben McKenzie), the man who will eventually become Commissioner Gordon.

Donal Logue is set to play Detective Harvey Bullock in the series, trying to rein in the crime committed on the streets of Gotham. Logue, a legend of film and television, recently sat down with MTV to discuss how the series will run in terms of exploring villains before they really become villains.

"You get to meet these people, it's like, 'well, why did they turn bad?'" Logue said. "They didn't wake up one day and be a fully-formed Danny DeVito 'The Penguin.' Were they picked on? Were they ridiculed? How did they form? For me, the most fascinating part of being in the show is to go, 'oh, so that's how he decides to turn his back on the good side and go to the dark side'... you always kind of wonder what made someone the way they were."

While the first season will focus on the rise of Oswald Cobblepot, a.k.a. The Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor), fans are already eagerly anticipating the inclusion of The Joker, widely acknowledged to be the biggest Batman villain of them all. Logue admitted that while The Joker may not appear in the first season, he will almost definitely be featured eventually.

"The Joker is kind of the crown prince of the villains of this thing," Logue admitted. "I'm excited to see who they get, and when it's introduced. It might not be in the first season, it depends probably on how well it does after it starts to air."

The first season already has several future villains cast, including Camren Bicondova as Selina Kyle, the woman who will become Catwoman and Cory Michael Smith as Edward Nygma, who becomes The Riddler. The series is even include a new villain in Fish Mooney, a gangster boss played by Jada Pinkett Smith. Oswald Cobblepot is merely a member of Mooney's gang, so it is possible that she could be the main villain of the season.

Gotham is slated to premiere Monday at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.
