George Clooney's new wife Amal Alamuddin is being heavily criticized for changing her surname and adopting the actor's last name. According to a new report, the human rights lawyer made waves for her name change, with some saying that it's a bad move for her career.

The name change was first noticed on her law firm's website on the day that she headed back to work in Athens on Monday to discuss how Greece can get back the Parthenon marbles from the British Museum.

Many critics are saying that the name change is "anti-feminist" and "backwards and subservient" to tradition while others are saying that Amal is "giving the impression that her name isn't as valuable as his."

While there have been plenty of critics voicing their opinion online, Eleanor Robertson of The Guardian wrote on Tuesday, "The real problem is that a conception of feminism centering individual choice runs into problems when we consider that all of our choices are mediated by language and culture."

She added, "This is true for everybody: nothing that we do or say can spring fully-formed from an inner well of volition, unmediated by social forces. The way we conceive of agency is itself influenced by what we're taught about our own subjectivity. Of course it's a two-way street, and critical awareness of how we're shaped by norms enables us to tinker with and change them according to what we think should be happening.

So far, Amal has not made any comments about her name change, although she is now being recognized as both Amal Alamuddin-Clooney and Amal Clooney by some media outlets.
