While the cast for the next X-Men movie hasn't been set yet, it seems like one high profile actor is going to continue to lobby with the writers and producers of the film to put him in as a segway into his own standalone movie. But will it happen soon?

Nicholas Hoult Says Some Love Scenes With Jennifer Lawrence Were Cut In Last 'X-Men' Movie

Speaking with MTV on Wednesday about his new film, The Book of Life, Channing Tatum gave a progress update on his Gambit passion project and said that he didn't want to give too much away so soon.

"We're finding a writer and sort of beating it out. I don't want to give too much away, because we don't know that much right now other than who Gambit is," Tatum said.

'X-Men' Writer Says Hugh Jackman's Future Is 'Very Tricky' Moving Forward

"We really do want to try our hardest to give something fresh. We're obviously going to go to the saving the world superhero movies eventually, but maybe not for the first one. We want to introduce this character in a very different way. When you try to do something different, you never know right off the bat what that is. We're feeling our way and really have to just prove that concept of that person."

It seems like Tatum is still down to play the superhero, but there are a lot of hoops that he must go through to get the standalone movie. The hero could always appear in the massive scale X-Men: Apocalypse, but so far the only teased characters are younger versions of the original trilogy cast.

It is also possible that Fox could be saving the character for one of their untitled 2018 movies that are set to continue the new X-Men universe they are creating.

With Tatum gaining a lot of accolades lately, it could show Fox that they can make a franchise around him and allow the actor to take on the role soon.

X-Men: Apocalypse is set to open in theaters on May 27, 2016.
