It looks like the superhero character that Channing Tatum has been dying to play is getting the green light from Fox to join the new X-Men universe. But could he be making an appearance in the next movie?

Magneto Getting His Own Film? Recent Trends Could Push Fox To Make It

Deadline reported on Friday that Tatum is set to star as Gambit in a standalone movie with Robocop writer Josh Zetumer writing the script for the film. Tatum will also produce the film with partner Reid Carolin, Lauren Shuler Donner, and Simon Kinberg.

According to the site, the screenplay will be based on a treatment penned by legendary Marvel Comics writer Chris Claremont, who with Jim Lee created the character for Marvel in 1990. The storyline is being kept under wraps.

The character, which also goes by the name Remy LeBeau, has the ability to charge matter with volatile kinetic energy, causing the object in question to explosively release its charge on impact. The character materialized in a short burst in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Tatum has been hinting at playing the character for awhile now, but it looks like Fox has finally committed to bringing his vision to life. But will he appear in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse?

It would probably seem logical, as Fox would want to introduce the character to audiences prior to throwing him his own film, even with Tatum involved. It also would give them the opportunity to connect the film to the previous films in the universe and re-establish the character after the poor reception from Taylor Kitsch's performance.

X-Men: Apocalypse is set to open in theaters on May 27, 2016.
