While this summer's installment was the eye-opener for Sony, the next two movies before the third Spider-Man movie could be the back-breakers for the studio and their proposed cinematic universe.

Andrew Garfield Might Be In 'Sinister Six' To Help Boost Spider-Man Brand?

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 didn't do as well as Sony probably hoped. It made a moderate amount of money and critics panned it. What does that mean for the third movie? It could possibly not happen if the next two movies do just as poorly.

With Sinister Six and an unknown female-led film in front of the proposed 2018 release date of The Amazing Spider-Man 3, these two titles are what defines if Sony moves forward with the trilogy of Spidey films. It was already proposed that Andrew Garfield star in the former in order to let the studio put all their cards into this movie.

Mary Jane Watson Or Gwen Stacy? 'Amazing Spider-Man 3' Could Have A Big Choice

It doesn't help that the success over at Marvel has shown that they can turn even the most obscure heroes (like the Guardians of the Galaxy) into box office gold while Sony is unable to make the comic book mogul's most well-known hero as popular.

Rumors have swirled that Sony may be looking to send Spider-Man over to Marvel in some sort of deal, but who knows if there is any truth to that. Instead, Sony is going to try and scrounge up any last hope for the franchise with Sinister Six before potentially throwing in the flag in either 2016 or 2017.

So what does this mean for Amazing Spider-Man 3? Right now, it means that it isn't really a thing yet. While they announced that they would move it to 2018, there has been so much movement in between that the studio may just not focus on it and try to put all their eggs in the Sinister Six basket.

With Marc Webb even taking a break to do other projects, don't count on a third movie just yet.
