Two new characters are about to join the cast of nurses on the British drama Call the Midwife.

Chatter On Shelagh's Scary Moment In The 'Call The Midwife' Christmas Special

On Thursday, Radio Times posted the details from the two actress who will be a part of the series now that Jenny Lee and Cynthia are taking off. Nurse Barbara Gilbert, played by Charlotte Ritchie, will cause some drama although it might be followed with some positivity.

"She begins quite badly and sort of redeems herself later on," Ritchie said. "She has a couple of really tragic moments which is awful and then she kind of gets into her stride a bit more- but she still continues to make mistakes along the way."

The second character to join the series is Nurse Phyllis Crane, played by Linda Bassett. She didn't reveal exactly what her character would bring although she sounds pretty stoked to be part of the show.

"I was delighted to be offered the job," the actress said. "I was born in the 50s so it's fun to work in a period that I can remember and know so much about."

Bassett pointed out that she was a fan of the show before so odds are likely that she's going to have some fun.

"I watched a lot of episodes before I started," she said. "I do ration myself because a lot of them are very moving and make me cry."

Call the Midwife returns in early 2015.
