As the Penguin's (Robin Lord Taylor) journey continues on Fox's Gotham, one villain's story will just be beginning.

Danny DeVito Comments On Robin Lord Taylor As The Penguin on 'Gotham'

The Penguin/Oswald Cobblepot has been quite the scene stealer through the first season of Gotham. But another scene stealing future villain is Edward Nygma (Cory Michael Smith), who will eventually turn into the Riddler. Gotham executive producer Bruno Heller spoke with TVGuide.com recently and revealed that Nygma's story would be explored more in the second half of the season.

"Penguin was born a sociopath and was always going down this path one way or another," Heller said. "Nygma is someone who becomes the villain, and we see that journey begin in the second half of the season."

Nygma has mostly been the comic relief through his attempted courting of Ms. Kringle (Chelsea Spack). Though he has been bullied and made fun of by his co-workers, he is ultimately motivated by his love for her.

"What motivates people to do things is oftentimes love," Spack told the publication. "He is slowly starting to break through her defenses, but we take two steps forward and then one step back. It's not smooth sailing for Edward Nygma. It's complicated for her to have somebody's feelings in her hand. It's not as simple as rejecting somebody and having a clean conscience because she's starting to realize how deeply he cares."

As for the most popular Batman villain, the Joker, Heller said that they would be scratching the surface of this storyline by the end of the first season.

Gotham airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.
