Laura Carmichael from Downton Abbey opened up on her character's difficult storyline.

'Downton Abbey' Stars Dish On Their Characters' Stories In Season 5

On Wednesday, Style posted an interview with the actress who plays Edith on the British drama. She mentioned how challenging it can be to portray a character who has to deal with a lot of scary issues.

"I'm always excited to start the new season. I knew there were going to be some tough times for Edith," Carmichael said. "Her lover is missing, presumed dead; she's hiding the fact that she's had his baby but wants desperately to be part of her daughter's life. I knew it would be a challenge, but I think all actors relish that."

The actress then pointed out how grateful she is to be able to take on a storyline like this one.

"I love the fact that [series creator] Julian [Fellowes] was exploring how she would have felt and how anyone might feel in that situation," Carmichael said. "That to me was very interesting, and I felt very lucky that I was getting a chance to do that."

The television star was then asked if Edith and her sister Mary will ever reach a point where they can be close with each other. If anyone has hope for that, it might be time to let that go.

"No," Carmichael said. "It would be great, but I think they are both too stubborn."

Downton Abbey airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on PBS.
