In the third season the Underwood marriage completely came crumbling down, and Claire was almost out the door. It has been fascinating to watch the marriage which formed the bedrock for Frank, and was his greatest support system in the first two seasons, giving way. Willimon realizes that they have set things up to only worsen between the couple from here on out. While speaking to the publication at a special screening of the third season for Emmy voters in Los Angeles, Willimon revealed that the writing team was nervous about the relationship coming to an end.

"A lot of the strength of the show is based on the strength of that marriage. But as soon as we began to explore that, we realized there was no turning back," Willimon said. "We also realized we'd laid the groundwork in the previous two seasons for this conflict between Francis and Claire, the more we began exploring it, the more inevitable it became. And the more exciting it was for us to travel that emotional terrain."

When asked if Frank will be able to move forward without Claire, who has been so pivotal to his success so far, Willimon dished that that would be one of the moot points of the storyline in season 4.

"That's one of the big questions going into season four," he said.

Season 4 is set to return in 2016.
