Fans of Grey's Anatomy bid Patrick Dempsey's hunky doctor character farewell last Thursday as he tragically died.

Upset 'Grey's Anatomy' Fans Petition For Dr. Derek Shepherd's Return

Dempsey was part of the medical drama since it began airing in 2005 and despite renewing his contract just last year for another two years, he was ready to leave the series and the series creator Shonda Rhimes let him go in a shocking, dramatic and tear-jerking way.

Dr. Derek "McDreamy" Shepherd will dearly be missed, but the 49-year-old actor revealed to Entertainment Weekly what is next for him.

What We'll Miss Most About McDreamy Now That He's Gone From 'Grey's Anatomy'

While the dust has not settled yet over the loss of Dempsey's character, the entertainment site shared its complete interview with Dempsey on Sunday, where he divulged his gratefulness for being part of such a wonderful series.

"I'm very grateful for that character, for what Shonda and ABC have given to me. It allows me to do so many things. I want to try something different," Dempsey dished, adding, "Will I be allowed to do something different? Is Derek so identifiable that I can't go on and be someone else? That will be the challenge, to see if people embrace me as someone else."

Dempsey also shared he'd "like to be a producer" and revealed he has some things developed, including The Limit, which he sold to the Sundance Channel.

"It's Mad Men in the racing world in the 1960s," he described.

The actor is also in talks with NBC International about Fodors, which is a TV show that's "basically a travelogue spy thriller."

Grey's Anatomy airs Thursday nights on ABC.
