CBS takes fans behind the scenes to the wardrobe of The Good Wife, with an interview with the costume designer of the legal drama.

Elsbeth Set To Return In Season 7

The chief designer for the show, Daniel Lawson talked about what goes into constructing the look for each character and about how even the storyline and character arcs influence his vision.

"Story doesn't just make a difference, everything I put on an actor is due to story. My primary job is to help tell that story through clothing. It's almost like painting pictures with fabric," he said. "When a character's look on the show changes, it is usually a very gradual process. It doesn't happen overnight. For example, just because a character loses their money let's say doesn't mean the next time we see them they are going to be wearing distressed clothes with holes in them. That wouldn't make sense. We try to be true to our research and to the story and try to marry the two worlds in a realistic way."

Critics Unforgiving Of Controversial Season 6 Finale Scene Of The Good Wife

Lawson also dished about the challenges of designing clothes for a courtroon which can put limitations on creativity because of the formula and a certain degree of decorum.

"Business wear can become very mundane and dark. So I try to keep the look of the show from falling into that trap. Another challenge that is not unique to this show but common to most television shows, is short prep times and last minute casting," he said. "So I have to work quickly and accurately in a short amount of time to achieve the look we want, which can be very nerve-wracking because I am a real stickler for proper fit. And if I'm getting an actor at the last minute for a fitting, our amazing tailor is certainly getting the garment sometimes minutes before the actor is to go on camera. Again, the time crunch is not unique to our show, but a common challenge for television shows in general."
