As it turns out, not everyone on AMC's Mad Men got the part he/she went in to audition for nearly a decade ago.

Elisabeth Moss Explains The Risk She Took Signing On For 'Mad Men'

Imagine that Elisabeth Moss didn't play Peggy Olson and that January Jones, who plays Betty, had been cast in the role instead. It seems that this was a lot closer to happening that some fans might realize.

On Tuesday Jones told People that she'd originally auditioned for the role of Peggy during the initial casting process. In fact, she went in to read for Peggy a number of times.

Fortunately for fans, creator Matthew Weiner had a different idea for the actress.

"Matt [then] wrote a couple of scenes for me to read for Betty because she wasn't a character yet," explained Jones. "She was at the end of the pilot, but there weren't any scenes for her."

Jones nailed the audition and scored the part of Betty, Elisabeth Moss came in and took on the role of Peggy and the series fans know and love today was born.

As the series draws to a close this year, it's hard for Jones to believe that it is actually over.

"I almost can't even remember my life before [Mad Men]," admitted Jones. "It's been a beautiful journey."

Mad Men will return on AMC for the remainder of its seventh and final season on Sunday, April 5 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
