Apple's supplemental security update for OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 carries a solution to a kernel issue. iMacs running the operating system could freeze up and become sporadically unresponsive. The update expects to fix that core problem.

The latest update is available through the Mac App Store on compatible machines that are running OS X El Capitan. This supplemental security update is not yet listed on Apple's official page for security updates. This page usually provides  facts and more details about the fixes that these updates bring.

The 2016-003 Security Update for OS X El Capitan was originally released on December 13 alongside macOS Sierra10.12.2. The original update fixed a number of security vulnerabilities in the OS X El Capitan operating system. Last El Capitan build was released in July before macOS was released with new features and improvements.

Customers who have not yet downloaded the security update at all will get the new version when updating their machines. Customers who previously installed the security fix will receive a supplemental update to address the freezing problem. Mac users who are still running OS X El Capitan can download the update.

To download the update, visit the Mac App Store and tap the Software Update to launch the mechanism that would automatically retrieve the file and install it. Direct download links are provided for users through the Standard Update support page and the Supplemental Update support page. It isn't clear if the new security update also comes with other features or bug fixes.

Apple is providing the detailed release notes soon. Apple finally has an answer to the freezing problem of Mac devices running OS X El Capitan. The supplemental security update that will hopefully fix the kernel issue and restore the seamless user experience of MacBooks and Mac devices once again.
