Nicole Kidman is opening up about the grief she endured trying to conceive with ex Tom Cruise. The actress reveals all in a new interview.

It Just Wasn't In The Cards For Them

Speaking to The Tatler in the UK, the Big Little Lies star admitted she wanted to have children with Cruise since the moment they met. Kidman was in her twenties and just starting her career when the two first got together.

The couple, who became Hollywood royalty, never managed to have biological children together. Kidman, now 50, opened up to the publication about how it affected her and how, after years of trouble with the press after her bitter divorce from Cruise, she managed to re-emerge and win an Oscar for her work.

The Oscar-winner married Cruise when she was just 22, and by the following year, she was expecting. Kidman had an ectopic pregnancy, meaning the embryo began to develop outside of the uterus.

The couple adopted daughter Isabella, now 24, followed by son Connor, who is now 22. Kidman noted that, because her sister was adopted, she always figured adoption would be part of her family. The actress also played an adoptive mother in Lion, which was based on a true story.

Kidman admitted to suffering a miscarriage around the same time Cruise filed for divorce. She opened up to The Tatler about how difficult it was for her.

"There's an enormous amount of pain and an enormous amount of joy on the other side of it," she explained, referring to the fact she managed to eventually conceive.

The actress noted that miscarriages aren't discussed enough in general, and pointed to that terrible ache women feel after suffering one.

"I know the yearning. ... It's a huge, aching yearning. ... The loss of a miscarriage is not talked about enough," she said.

Finding Happiness In The End

Kidman and Cruise got divorced back in 2001, with Kidman eventually settling down with musician Keith Urban, whom she married in 2006. The couple had two biological children; daughters Sunday Rose, 9, and Faith, 7.

She and Urban have kept their family life mostly private. The Big Little Lies star did open up to PEOPLE towards the end of last year about their parenting style.

"We take responsibility of parenting so seriously, but we also keep an open conversation between our kids," she said at the time.

The reasons for Kidman's shock split from Cruise remain relatively unknown, but many have pointed to the actor's involvement in the Church of Scientology.
