Comedian and podcaster Joe Rogan has put his foot in his mouth again, this time for his comments about the L.A. homeless population.

While speaking with guest and fellow comedian Tom Segura on the July 14th episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, the discussion of the unhoused turned ugly when Rogan jokingly suggested that,

"Maybe you should just go shoot the homeless people."

The comment came while the two were smoking cigars and trying to make sense of the laws protecting the homeless. Rogan talks about how they were near an L.A. overpass and saw several port-a-potties, a car parked on the sidewalk, and a dresser with a shoe rack. This is when Segura chimed in with,

"I didn't know that when you see stuff like that on the streets, at least in Los Angeles or maybe in California, that's protected property. Like by law. Did you know that?"

Rogan replies,

"Oh, a homeless person's property is protected?"

Segura: "Absolutely. If you were to try to move that or take that-"

Rogan: "You'd get arrested. Hilarious. But they wouldn't arrest you if you shot somebody. Maybe you should just go shoot the homeless people."

Segura: "I like your ideas."

Rogan: "And if nobody claims it...I mean nobody does anything about violent crime in LA anymore."

Variety brought the clip to the attention of community leaders. Theo Henderson, an advocate for the unhoused and host of the We the Unhoused podcast, had this to say:

"It's repulsive. It's infuriating because it's not only out of touch, but the reality is that unhoused people are targeted by housed people. To advocate trying to shoot at unhoused people or just giving these dog whistles to people that do not see unhoused people as human beings - I can't believe you'd advocate for it."

What Rogan failed to realize is that we live in a climate of uncertainty, depression, financial instability, and rampant mass shootings - All issues a man who is worth more than $100 Million dollars has no clue about. His irresponsible rhetoric, even if said in jest, is not something to throw around lightly given our current gun violence issues. Joe Rogan is doing nothing more than stoking a fire that needs to be quenched.

Comedy is only funny when nobody's actually getting hurt.
