She had to go her own way. "High School Musical" star Vanessa Hudgens gets vulnerable during a dark time in her life and attributes her success to THIS mental technique.

Vanessa Anne Hudgens made her acting debut in the feature film "Thirteen" in 2003, and rose to mainstream media success for her role as Gabriella Montez in the "High School Musical" film series in 2006. The actress, later on, reprised her role in two more "High School Musical" films.

In a recent interview with Nylon, the 33 year old actress-singer opened up about her career and personal journey. "The Princess Switch" star expressed that she had entered her late 20s feeling lost.

"I woke up at 27 like, 'I have no idea who I am, what I want, or what I stand for,'" Hudgens expressed. "I realized how much of myself I gave away to others, when I actually was giving away and turning off pieces of myself. When you get older, the sexier boundaries are."

Hudgens' Secret to Self-Discovery

The actress, now in her 30s, reflects on her career successes. Hudgens recently attended this year's Paris Fashion Week for the first time and hosted the red carpet at the 2022 Met Gala. The actress flaunted a stunning see-through black lace dress for her red carpet coverage alongside La La Anthony.

According to Nylon, the 33 year old actress attributes her success to a form of self-therapy called "shadow work". The actress-singer has been known to take an interest in all things divine and supernatural.

Hudgens explained that she was able to overcome her "lost" feelings by uncovering her repressed thoughts of self-doubt. The process was inspired by psychologist Carl Jung's coined term, "the shadow self".

The "Gotta go my own way" singer further explained that she started asking herself questions through "shadow work" to address her personal and professional limits.

"What are the things I actually don't like about myself? What are the things that I put on a mask for? I realized how much of myself I gave away to others, when I actually was giving away and turning off pieces of myself," Hudgens explained. "The public only sees so much. I've also been through two very long life-changing relationships, and no one really knows what happened except for me. When I write my memoir, it'll be amazing."

Vanessa Hudgens is set to star in and produce the upcoming film "Big Rig", a female-led truck driving film.
