Mission Impossible: Cinco de Mayhem, the fifth installment of the popular Tom Cruise action franchise, will release on Christmas Day, Dec. 25 2015, according to Variety.

Cruise will reprise his role as spy Ethan Hunt in the film, which he is producing with Skydance Productions head David Ellison. Christopher McQuarrie, who has worked with Cruise on Jack Reacher, will be directing the film.

McQuarrie confirmed that he was coming on board the project when he tweeted on Aug. 5, "Mission: Accepted."

The past four films in the series were directed by different directors: Brian De Palma, John Woo, J.J. Abrams, and Brad Bird, respectively.

Cruise spoke in August about McQuarrie talents as well as his past working with a different director on four Mission Impossible projects.

"I began producing the films with the goal that a different director with his own vision would make each one," he said. "Chris is an extraordinary filmmaker who will deliver the heart-pounding action and thrills that audiences around the world have come to expect from the Mission: Impossible franchise."

Drew Pearce, who co-wrote Iron Man 3 with Shane Black, will be writing the script.  The film is scheduled to release one week after Star Wars Episode VII hits theaters and will be sharing its release date with Kung Fu Panda 3 and Live By Night, the latter being Ben Affleck's adaptation of Dennis Lehane's crime novel.

It has not been confirmed if cast members from Mission Impossible:Ghost Protocol -- played by Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton, and Simon Pegg -- will be starring in the 2015 film.
