Even though there are still a number of episodes that have been renewed, one might wonder when it's time for Downton Abbey to be laid to rest.

Thomas Will Have A 'Harrowing Storyline' On 'Downton Abbey'

On Saturday, Press Association posted an interview with actor Hugh Bonneville (Lord Grantham) who mentioned that even though the series has been renewed for a sixth season before the fifth season even began in the United States, the show has to end at some point.

"Shows like Downton are once in a career, and I know it will come to an end eventually- and I can just retire and do some knitting," Bonneville said.

The actor pointed out that it's series creator Julian Fellowes who has the power of the show's future.

"It's a unique show, in that it feels so big in scale, but it comes down to one person's imagination; [writer and producer] Julian Fellowes," Bonneville said.

"It's really him, and he'll know when it's time to tie-up all the loose ends and put it to bed," the actor added.

This gives some suspicion that the sixth season could be the last for the British drama since there's already chatter about the show ending before that time even happens. But whatever takes place in the future, Bonneville talked about how honored he is to be a part of it.

"I feel like a very lucky actor to be in a show that people love and continues to grow around the world," he said.

Downton Abbey Season 5 will premiere in the United States on Sunday, January 4 at 9 p.m. ET on PBS.
