BBC's Sherlock might not be returning in time for the holidays, at least according to co-creator Steven Moffat.

Though it had been announced that the Sherlock holiday special would air at some point during the Christmas season, Moffat isn't even sure of that.

"I can only tell you the truth. The honestly truthful thing I can say is we don't know when it's going to go on, and people keep asking," he explained to RadioTimes.com. "I know it won't be for a while, and I suspect it's going to be end of year-ish, and as everyone has seen, it's Victorian."

Considering it is supposed to be a holiday special, one would suspect that it will be set during the Christmas season, but Moffat would not even give up that piece of information.

"I don't suppose [Victorians] went around thinking 'hey, it's Christmas everyday' but it does look festive, yeah," he said. "That's not me hinting it's Christmas day. I have no reason to suppose that."

Either way, Moffat is delighted to have written the holiday special with the other Sherlock co-creator, Mark Gatiss.

"It's the first time that Mark and I officially have written it together," Moffat said. "Unofficially we always write it together, but it's the first time officially we've actually sat in a room to write it."

Very little has been revealed about the Sherlock holiday special or the fourth season that will air after this. Stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are currently in London filming the special.
