A series about two mothers raising a group of teenagers who face the harsh light of reality, ABC Family's The Fosters is known for tackling a range of heavy and controversial issues. But as the show ended its second season just last month, there was one particular storyline that co-creator Peter Paige was really proud of: a romantic storyline between two teen boys.

While recently attending an Out Magazine event in Los Angeles, where Paige was making an appearance with other celebrities known for their contributions to the LGBTQ community, Enstars caught up with the former Queer as Folk actor to talk about the Jude-Connor love story.

"Being able to put two 13-year-old boys discovering their sexuality and their love for each other- nothing moves me like that," Paige explained.

'The Fosters' Gets Renewed For A Third Season

As fans of the show will remember, Jude joined the Foster family at the start of the series with his sister Callie as a foster kid seeking refuge from an abusive home. Almost from the start of season 1, his friendship with Connor led to speculation of a possible same-sex attraction between the two. The relationship became more serious throughout the most recent season and led to some heartwarming scenes, including the momentous pinky-holding incident at the movies, their first kiss (the youngest gay kiss in TV history), and Jude's line in the season finale: "He's my boyfriend."

But not all of Jude and Connor's young love has been easy. They've had to face some tough battles on the series, especially with Connor's controlling father. And as it turns out, there was some real world backlash that came with the Jude-Connor storyline, something that Paige admits he didn't expect.

Conservative groups like One Million Moms had already protested the show before and more conservative criticism arose as Jude and Connor's storyline progressed through season 2. One Twitter user wrote, "Nothing about this entire show seems suitable for children" while another posted, "DISGUSTING, WHY IS THIS BEING FORCED ON US".

And then in March, YouTube reportedly added an age restriction warning on the 'Jonnor' kiss scene, something that Gavin MacIntosh (the actor who plays Connor) was not happy about.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, MacIntosh blasted the site in a tweet that has now been deleted, writing: "WHAT?! YouTube blocking #jonnor scene w/ age restrictions? 100% discrimination & homophobia! SO innocent compared to what's on YouTube!"

The video hosting service has since removed the age restriction on the video.

Considering that the series already featured two married gay women raising a family, it probably seemed unlikely that most people would care about two boys in a relationship. But surprisingly enough, controversy can still happen.

"I was a little blissfully naive," Paige said. "The show had gone with so little controversy that we were just sort of focused on the storytelling and the characters. And I was excited! I was excited for the fans and I was a little taken aback. I shouldn't have been, but I was."

The Fosters Season 3 is expected to premiere this summer on ABC Family.
