Actress Constance Wu recalls this betrayal from actor Simu Liu after joking about her controversial "Fresh off the Boat" tweets.

Constance Wu made her acting debut in 2006 with a supporting role in the film "Stephanie Daley". She, later on, rose to prominence due to her breakthrough role as the lead actress in the ABC comedy series "Fresh Off the Boat", which had been her first television role. The show aired from 2015 to 2020 for six seasons.

In 2019, the actress suffered from online backlash due to her upset tweets on the renewal of "Fresh off the Boat", as fans had called her out for appearing "ungrateful". According to Wu, the reason for her outburst was that she had to give up on a different project due to reprising her role on "Fresh off the boat".

The 'Unforgettable Gala' For Constance Wu

Wu recently appeared on an episode of "Red Table Talk" with hosts Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith, and Adrienne Banfield-Norris. The 40-year-old actress recalled a painful time following her controversial tweets during the 2019 Unforgettable Gala.

"They wanted me to come 'cause they wanted to celebrate [Fresh off the Boat] and the kids on the show," Wu recalled during the interview. "At that time, there was so much controversy around me that I was like if I go, people are just gonna want to talk about the tweets. And like, I love my kids on the show so much. I want this to be a moment for them to celebrate."

However, despite the reassurance that was given to Wu, this did not stop host Simu Liu from cracking a joke at her expense. It is unknown what exactly the actor said, but Deadline reports that Liu had taken a "playful jab" at the "Fresh off the Boat" star.

"I was sitting there alone, trying not to cry in a public setting and the whole audience was like, 'Oh, s---!" Wu recalled. "They had promised they wouldn't mock me and they did it right off the bat. It almost felt like they were setting me up for it. And it truly felt like a betrayal from the Asian American community. A couple months prior to that, I was in the emergency room."

Wu's Suicide Attempt

Prior to the "mockery" she experienced from the 2019 Unforgettable Gala, Wu revealed that she had attempted suicide following the online backlash she received for her controversial tweets.

Wu noted, however, that none of her peers had known about her mental health incident at that time. Additionally, the "Crazy Rich Asians" actress stated that Simu Liu had given her a "sincere apology" following his joke.
