Despite its low ratings this season, The X Factor could be back for another season, but with a few changes.

"I think the show will be coming back next year," Simon Cowell told Billboard. "As to my role on it, I might have a different kind of role, we haven't discussed that yet."

This might come as a suprise to some since the show has suffered it's lowest ratings to date. For example, season 3's first episode garnered 6.2 million viewers, a disappointing number compared to the 12 million who tuned into the season 1 premiere in 2011 and the over 8 million who watched the first episode of season 2.

Perhaps Cowell's new plans will help the show increase its viewer. The judge revealed that he'd like the show to air only once a week instead of twice.

"I won't say which night but I think it's a better night for us and if we get it, that would be amazing," he said. "When the shows are popular, the networks want to make them longer and that's not necessarily a good thing."

The British star also spoke about his show's competitors, including The Voice, and said the better ratings don't discourage him.

"Of course we're not happy about it, but we're all big boys and when you run a record label and a TV company, sometimes you win and sometimes you're in second or third place," he said. "The great thing about our team is it never gets us down and everybody works that much harder."

The 54-year-old also boasted about season 3's duo Alex & Sierra, who he's mentored throughout the season.

"When Alex & Sierra auditioned for the show, I thought they would win because of all the shows this year, in my opinion, they are by far the best artists to come through," he said. "I want the show to end with the best act winning the show."
