Orange is the New Black actress Laverne Cox is speaking out about her recent Emmy nomination and how she broke ground as a transgendered actress finding success.

In early July, Cox was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as the prison's hairstylist Sophia Burset on Orange is the New Black, the first ever transgendered person to be nominated for an Emmy.

Cox appeared on The View Monday to discuss the nomination and compared it to actor Sidney Poitier breaking ground and winning a Lead Actor Oscar in 1964, becoming the first black actor to win the category.

"What he says about that moment is that he didn't feel that he had overcome as black actors because he was the only one," Cox explained. "So I think that the revolution begins when it's not just me, and there's more of us."

Cox said that previous roles were not as juicy and nuanced as the one she gets to play in Orange is the New Black.

"I was waiting for a part that really had nuance, complexity and dimension," she said. "I just wanted to do my best, give it all and show people what I've got, and I have an Emmy nomination now!"

Cox is nominated against two of her Orange is the New Black co-stars, Uzo Aduba (who plays "Crazy Eyes") and Natasha Lyonne (Nicky) along with Saturday Night Live guest hosts Tina Fey and Melissa McCarthy and Shameless standout Joan Cusack.

"I hope that people out there now can associate being transgender with being accomplished, being successful and achieving your dreams," she said.

Orange is the New Black Season 3 is expected to begin streaming in Summer 2015. Seasons 1 and 2 are currently streaming on Netflix.
