The Blacklist is hyping season 2 with the series' most pressing question, but that doesn't mean viewers will soon get an answer about the identity of Liz's father.

Red (James Spader) thought he put the question to rest early in the freshman season, but last spring's "Berlin: Conclusion" brought his paternal denial into question. Now, a new promo for the NBC series is laying out the facts before season 2 begins (see video below).

Unfortunately, the Red/Liz (Megan Boone) mystery forms a crucial overarching theme for the series. Much like The Mentalist, the series could - and very well might - play this story out over the long haul.

The question of who Raymond Reddington is to Elizabeth Keene is central to the conceit of the show," said series creator Jon Bokenkamp at the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con, according to Entertainment Weekly. "It's a question we will continue to answer and continue to explore. It's certainly not anything we want to be answering."

That doesn't mean season 2 won't provide viewers with more details about the pair's past.

"I think in the second season we start to learn little bits more about Reddington and the sort of mythological history and so on," Spader said at the series' Comic-Con panel. "But the more you know, the less you know.

That axiom couldn't be more appropriate for The Blacklist, where every answer leads to a host of more complicated questions.
