With winter in full swing across the U.S. and the rush of holiday shopping long over, the time has come to make plans to spend Friday nights (and the rest of the weekend) sitting in movie theaters and seeing the newest films Hollywood is offering.

Several new offerings are going to open on Friday, Jan. 23, giving those who head to the movies plenty of new options to choose from when they head to the theater. Spanning all sorts of genres, the newest movies will also feature some of the biggest names in Hollywood as well.

Against The Sun

STARRING: Tom Felton, Garret Dillahunt, Jake Abel. Directed by Brian Falk

SUMMARY: An adventure centered around a WWII pilot, bombardier, and radioman who find themselves adrift on a lifeboat without food or water.

WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING: N/A

Black or White

STARRING: Kevin Costner, Gillian Jacobs, Jennifer Ehle, Anthony Mackie, Octavia Spencer, Bill Burr. Directed by Mike Binder.

SUMMARY: Race drama about a grieving widower who is drawn into a custody battle over his granddaughter, whom he helped raise her entire life.

WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING: N/A

Black Sea

STARRING: Jude Law, Scoot McNairy, Jodie Whittaker. Directed by Kevin MacDonald

SUMMARY: An adventure thriller about a submarine captain who takes a job with a shadowy backer to search the depths of the black sea for a sub that's rumored to be loaded with gold.

WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING: Not particularly deep, but becomes an efficiently well-crafted thriller thanks to Macdonald's direction and a fantastic performance by Law.

Cake

STARRING: Jennifer Aniston, Anna Kendrick, Britt Robertson, Sam Worthington, William H. Macy, Chris Messina, Felicity Huffman. Directed by Daniel Barnz

SUMMARY: Drama about a woman who becomes fascinated by the suicide of a woman in her chronic pain support group. LIMITED RELEASE.

WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING: While it's nice to see Aniston finally test her dramatic chops as an actress, the film lacks the depth and warmth that make it recommendable to those beyond her biggest fans.

Mortdecai

STARRING: Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, Oliver Platt, Aubrey Plaza, Jeff Goldblum. Directed by David Koepp

SUMMARY: Crime drama about art dealer Charles Mortdecai, who searches for a stolen painting rumored to contain a secret code that gains access to hidden Nazi gold.

WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING: N/A

Song One

STARRING: Anne Hathaway, Ben Rosenfield, Johnny Flynn, Mary Steenburgen. Directed by Kate Barker-Froyland

SUMMARY: Anne Hathaway stars as an anthropologist doing research in Morocco who returns to New York when her brother falls into a coma after an accident.

WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING: There's plenty of charm, but the story is too familiar and not very original.

Strange Magic

STARRING: Alan Cumming, Evan Rachel Wood, Kristin Chenoweth, Maya Rudolph, Sam Palladio, Alfred Molina, Elijah Kelley. Directed by Gary Rydstrom.

WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING: N/A

The Boy Next Door

STARRING: Jennifer Lopez, Ryan Guzman, Ian Nelson, John Corbett, Kristin Chenoweth, Lexi Atkins, Hill Harper. Directed by Rob Cohen.

SUMMARY: Thriller about a newly-divorced woman who falls for a younger man who has recently moved in across the street from her, but their torrid affair soon takes a dangerous turn.

WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING: Those who enjoy stalker thrillers might get a kick out of it, but most won't even find the movie decent enough to be labeled as "so bad it's good."

The Humbling

STARRING: Al Pacino, Greta Gerwig, Kyra Sedgwick, Dylan Baker, Dianne Wiest, Dan Hedaya, Nina Arianda, Victor Cruz. Directed by Barry Levinson.

SUMMARY: Comedy-drama about an aged and addled actor who has his world turned upside down after he embarks upon an affair with a lesbian.

WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING: While it is one of Pacino's better movies from his later-life filmography, but he's capable of much better.
