Goodbye, American Idol. It's been a scintillating 15 years, and there was no better way to end than by crowning Trent Harmon as the 2016 Idol!

Judges Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez, and Harry Connick, Jr. shepherded us into a blockbuster finale with two immensely talented contestants on the card. Harmon and La'Porsha Renae both made it the last round of voting, but the University of Arkansas grad ultimately won America's favor.

For our money, the pair was evenly matched. As the only contestant to never land in the Bottom 2, however, Harmon had the edge. Even a bout of mono couldn't keep his smooth vocals from shinning through.

It's too bad Idol's focus on its final show overshadowed the big reveal. The two-hour episode played homage to Fox's star reality series, which the crowd certainly enjoyed. Trotting out the original judges' panel just ahead of the winner's announcement was probably not the best timing. Nevertheless, viewers were psyched to see Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and the notoriously caustic Simon Cowell reunited once more.

"Thank you America for inviting us into your homes, thank you to the contestants and to FOX for actually putting us on air," Cowell said.
