The Grey's Anatomy season 9 finale at the last minute showed Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) get electrocuted while trying to turn the hospital's lights back on.

Left alone in the hospital basement, passed out, when the finale ended, fans are wondering what will become of him when season 10 begins. The show's executive producer, Shonda Rhimes, is staying relatively mum on the subject, leaving fans wondering until the ABC series returns in the fall. When the finale aired she tweeted "Man down," but then later clarifying, saying that she was referring to the Scandal season finale.

The show's official Twitter account posed the question, "Will Richard survive?" on May 23 and the post was retweeted 430 times. As speculation continues about Richard's fate, Wetpaint has a number of reasons why Grey's Anatomy writers might in fact kill him off the show.

Richard is not chief of the hospital anymore, Adele has died, and his love life has not been as featured as much as the other doctors. Pickens' character has been more of a supporting character than a core one in season 9, perhaps hinting that writers are ready to let him go. The series is filled with drama and his death would also impact everyone in the hospital, making him a perfect candidate for new storylines. The hospital relies on his expertise, according to the website, and his death would shake Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital - which could be a good thing for rating and gets fans talking.
