A female mourner in Brazil was given quite the scare while visiting a family tomb Friday when she saw a man trying to pull himself out of the ground.

According to the Huffington Post, the woman was paying her respects at the cemetery in Sao Paulo's Ferraz de Vasconcelos when she heard noises and saw some dirt moving near a grave, which turned out to be the man, who had been buried alive .

"I was terrified to see a man who I though was dead, trying to get out of the grave," she said.

By the time authorities and emergency personnel arrived on the scene to help pull the man out of the ground, he had managed to get both his head and his arms free.

Neither the woman or the man have been officially identified, though the man is reportedly a city hall employee.

It is also unclear how he wound up in the grave, though it is believed he got into a fight in another part of the city, was beaten badly, and left to die.

After the rescue, the man was taken to a local hospital for treatment, though city officials would not disclose his current condition.

According to The International Business Times, this is the second time a man has been found buried alive in Brazil in the past three months alone. In September, a homeless man was beaten by a group of teenagers and buried alive on Leblon Beach.
