Lady Gaga defended her controversial performance at South by Southwest when she visited Today on Friday and said it was meant for "the spirit of creative rebellion."

The 27-year-old invited artist Millie Brown on stage with her during her performance at the concert series in Austin, Texas on March 13 and what came next shocked many.

As Gaga drummed on stage, Brown stuck her fingers down her throat and expelled colored goo all over the singer.

Yet, Brown is known for creating paintings with her own vomit. The eccentric artist swallows dyed soy milk and then regurgitates them on a white canvas.

"Millie and I know that not everybody is going to love that performance but we both really believe in artistic expression and strong identities and I support her and what she does," Gaga said. "ARTPOP, my new album, is about bringing art and music together in the spirit of creative rebellion and for us that performance was art in its purest form."

Some didn't view Gaga's actions positively, including fellow singer Demi Lovato, who slammed the star social media.

"Sad... As if we didn't have enough people glamorizing eat disorders already," Lovato tweeted. "Bottom line, it's not "cool" or "artsy" at all."

During her Today interview, Gaga also spoke about critics who believe she's pretending to be someone she's not.

"There's a perception that what I'm doing is all a big show and I really, truly feel that it's really just part of who I am," she said. "Every moment of my life is devoted to my music and to my fans and it's really, truly me."
