When the Vampire Diaries showrunners promised some big deaths by the end of season 5, they weren't kidding. Damon Salvatore's life came to an end on Thursday night's finale after he and Elena Gilbert finally admitted their true feelings. For many fans that news is probably hard to digest. But, can Damon (Ian Somerhalder) really be gone for good?

For starters, Somerhalder's contract extends till next season meaning he has to appear on the show in some magnitude. However, this doesn't mean he will ever make it out of the Other Side.

Wouldn't it be great if Elena (Nina Dobrev), who is devastated by her loss, finds a way to save her love? Or maybe Damon will try his best to make it back to her like he told her he would. "I will make it back to you. I promise," he said.

Whatever the case might be, it's clear that tons of fans want Damon on the show no matter what it takes. Many took to Twitter to express their shock over the season finale, "Home."

Yet, Damon wasn't the only shocking death this season. His brother, Stefan Salvatore, died on last week's episode after Traveler Julian went through Tyler's body and ripped out his heart from his chest. In the final moments, Caroline was seen standing over Stefan's corpse in shock as he passed through Bonnie. "Stefan is done-zo. Sorry guys," Paul Wesley, who plays Stefan, tweeted shortly after the segment aired.

The Vampire Diaries season 6 will premiere this fall on The CW.
