Agent Carter will take place a half century before Agents of SHIELD, but there is a high chance that the two series may see an overlap.

Hayley Atwell To Appear In 'Age Of Ultron', How Old Will Agent Carter Be?

From the presence of HYDRA to the symmetry of SHIELD Director Coulson (Clark Gregg) and the Strategic Scientific Reserve's Agent Carter (Hayley Atwell) laying (and re-laying) the foundations of SHIELD, Marvel fans will have a lot of crossover possibilities to ponder in the near future.

"We will be exploring a sort of return to the roots of SHIELD on [Agents of SHIELD], so if that at all has a connection to Carter then we'll see," teased SHIELD co-creator Maurissa Tancharoen at the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con, according to Seat 42F.

However, possible references to Carters 1940's work may have to wait until after Agent Carter's 8-episode first season.

"You're not seeing the beginning of SHIELD," cautioned Agent Carter executive producer Louis D'Esposito, according to IGN. "You're seeing the SSR and Peggy Carter working for the SSR and then how it eventually becomes SHIELD. But that will not happen in the first season. It takes a little bit of time before that will happen."

In the meantime, however, both the pre-SHIELD agent and her 21st century counterparts will play a hand in fighting the same multi-headed villain - HYDRA.

"HYDRA was a big part of [Captain America: The First Avenger]," D'Esposito said, referencing the film that introduced viewers to Carter. "They just defeated HYDRA so I'm not sure it's going to be in the first season but you will eventually see them, yeah."
