Olivia Benson will have more on her plate during Season 16 of Law and Order SVU. In a new promo, Benson (played by Mariska Hargitay) is struggling as a new mom.

Mariska Hargitay Reveals Why She Loves Olivia Benson

Entertainment Weekly reported Tuesday that in the new promo, Benson "struggles to find a balance between being a foster mother and being a detective." The website also said that "things only get more difficult when criminals start targeting the child as a way to get to her."

Hargitay recently addressed her character's maternal change on SVU. "They say when you're a parent, your heart goes from inside to outside," Hargitay told E! Online. "She's just trying to figure it out and I've got all these new notes to play. The show has a different tone in a way and it just feels new. After last year, which in many ways I felt like we kind of peaked and now I feel like we haven't..."

Hargitay also revealed that despite almost 16 seasons now of playing Benson that she "loves her more now than ever."

"I love her because I am challenged by her," Hargitay said. "I never know what's going to happen. She surprises me."

"This character has evolved, which is the most exciting part of it," Hargitay continued. "I feel in many ways she's a new character because she's gone through so much that has truly transformed her."

The drama returns Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 9/8c to NBC.
