John Logan is one of Hollywood's top writers, but the creator of Showtime's Penny Dreadful admits that his move into television this year was something completely new for him.

'Penny Dreadful' Will 'Get Back To Nature' This Season

"Before Penny Dreadful came to life, I'd never done a TV series," admitted Logan in a piece he wrote for Tuesday's issue of Variety. "It was an uncharted world to me."

He revealed that producer David Nevins was an incredibly help to him in bringing the Victorian supernatural drama to life. "He [Nevins] understood that my entire attraction to doing it was a novelistic endeavor," explained the three-time Oscar nominee and Tony winner. "I wanted to tell a story over time."

The shift from television to film wasn't necessarily as smooth as Logan would have liked. He struggled with getting a feel for it.

"My learning curve was stratospheric," he explained. "One of the great lessons David taught me was that while I had a good story, I didn't quite have the center of gravity to bring these disparate elements into a TV show. He gave me the organizing principles when he said that at their core, all television shows are about family. From that note on, I always have kept the idea of building Penny Dreadful as a family paramount in my mind."

Logan began to adapt his sensibilities as the went along, building a first season so successful it led to renewal after only half the episodes had aired.

"The uniqueness of TV is that you're telling an ongoing story," noted Logan, who has promised to deliver a narrative which reaches an even bigger scope as the drama enters its second season.

Penny Dreadful returns to Showtime for its second season in 2015.
