Fans might be interested to know if Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) might have a new romance in his future on Showtime's Penny Dreadful.

'We Are All Monsters' Says 'Penny Dreadful' Creator

During season one Ethan befriended both Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) and Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney), even making out with the latter during an evening filled with theatre, brawls, and absinthe. He also fell in love with Brona Croft (Billie Piper), who Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway) killed so that he could turn her into a companion for the creature Caliban (Rory Kinnear).

Vanessa of course broke Dorian's heart during the season finale, claiming that their "rare connection" could not be pursued. In July Carney confirmed at Comic Con that Dorian will be getting a new romantic interest for the upcoming season, which means the likelihood of him and Ethan getting together is slim. It is uncertain, however, whether or not Vanessa will perhaps find comfort and companionship in another.

Dark Secrets Revealed Through New 'Penny Dreadful' Set

The first official photo from season 2, released by Showtime last month, indicates that Vanessa and Ethan will be relying heavily on one another in the coming episodes. This storyline was then backed up when series creator John Logan told HitFix that "their intimacy" will grow as they "confront their demons together."

The reason Vanessa broke things off with Dorian was because she feared the evil inside of her which their intimacy unleashed, but the fact that Ethan unexplainably exorcised the demon from Vanessa's body during season 1 indicates that he is a very different kind of presence and perhaps his influence on her would be a positive one.

Penny Dreadful returns on Showtime for a second season in 2015.
