Vanessa Ives will be facing some pretty hard truths about her demons this season on Penny Dreadful.

During the show's first season, Vanessa (Eva Green), faced her biggest struggle yet in the form of demonic possession. As the foretold "mother of evil," the demon refused to let her go without a fight and she was hardly in a position to argue.

On Jan. 16 Showtime released a new behind-the-scenes look at the filming of the brutal flashback episode (featured below). It showed the lengths cast and crew went to in order to bring the horrors of it vividly to life.

Ethan Chandler Will Find Out What He Is On 'Penny Dreadful' This Season 

"It was great uncharted water for us to explore how does Vanessa manifest her demons," explained creator John Logan. Vanessa's demons come to her in the guise of people she knows and even trusts, including Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton) and later Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett).

"She has to be complicit in the wickedness that is a part of her…" added Logan, "On the one hand it is supernatural, and in the other hand it's psychological."

It seems that the psychological, not the supernatural will be Vanessa's greatest challenge this season. Vanessa will have to decide whether she wants her connection with the darkness gone for good, or if she likes being unique too much to part with it. She may decide to embrace her demons, in which case she will face many challenges moving forward.

Penny Dreadful returns on Showtime for a second season in 2015.
