Freya officially returned to The Originals this month, but it's uncertain whether or not the long lost Mikaelson sister will be mortal.

Freya Returns As Baby Hope Becomes 'Unstoppable' On 'The Originals'

Freya (Hannah Carolton Bliss) connected with Rebekah (Maisie Richardson Sellers) on a supernatural level during the midseason premiere. The nature of her return is still murky though. Has she returned from the dead as Esther (Sonja Sohn) had in a new body? Or as Mikael (Sebastian Roche) had in his old one?

Since Freya has never been on the series as an adult, it could go either way. Her blonde locks in the midseason premiere, however, suggest that she will be in her original Mikaelson body. This is only reinforced by the casting of Riley Voelkel, who will be taking over the role of Freya this season and even looks a little like the original Rebekah (Claire Holt).

Powerful Witch Is Murdering Teens On 'The Originals'

So is Freya a witch? A vampire? Her ability to move the letters Rebekah used to send for help implies she is more than the average human and having been stolen away as a child by Esther's powerful witch sister, it is more than likely she has developed a strong connection with magic.

On the other hand, a completely mortal Mikaelson would make for a unique twist on a series which thrives on incredibly unordinary characters.

The Originals continues on The CW with its second season Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
