Ragnar and Lagertha's relationship is about to get just that much more complicated when Vikings returns for season 4.

It's been a long time since Travis Fimmel's King and Katheryn Winnick's shield maiden were anything but fellow warriors, but Lagertha's death bed confession will shatter whatever post-marital trust the pair had.

"There's a kind of humiliation in opening your heart to someone when they're dead, and she just confessed that she still loved him. And now you think he's lying there [in the coffin] with a little smile on his face," series creator Michael Hirst teased, according to Variety. "That's a terrible thing. So, yeah, she has to navigate some difficult emotional - as well as political and physical - issues and it's another one."

That doesn't mean, however, that their friendship is over for good.

"Her relationship with Ragnar will continue to be changeable, but in a way, whether they like it or not, they're part of each other," Hirst explained.
