Chandra Levy Murder Case: New Secret Hearings Held, Conviction Could Be Thrown Out
In 2010, the Levy family thought they had finally received closure for the death of their 24-year-old Chandra, but new evidence has surfaced, leaving the guilty conviction in jeopardy.
Ingmar Guandique was convicted in 2010 of murdering Chandra Levy and sentenced to 60 years behind bars. The judge for the trial is now holding secret hearings because the credibility of the key witness is in doubt.
After her disappearance in May 2001, speculation swirled that then-Congressman Gary Condit of California was responsible for her disappearance as the two were involved in a secret affair while he was married. Condit was cleared as a suspect, but the case left a permanent stain on his political career. He lost a bid for re-election to congress in 2002.
The secret hearings have even left Chandra’s parents, Robert and Susan in the dark. Robert Levy said, “Whether they have a new trial or a new suspect we don’t know. They can’t tell us because it’s a secret.” Reporters and spectators were kicked out of a new hearing for the case. Several media outlets including the Washington Post and the Associated Press have filed a petition to open the proceedings. The next hearing is scheduled for February 7. 2013.
Chandra Levy’s remains were found in 2002 in Rock Creek Park in Washington, D.C. Guandique was convicted of murdering Levy without any physical evidence linking him to the crime.
When asked about Guandique’s possible chance at vindication, Robert Levy said, “He’s a convicted rapist and an illegal alien. He’s not legal at all or working or anything. He’s just a criminal, so he shouldn’t go free. But if he’s innocent of murder then he shouldn’t be in jail for it.”
Two women accused Guandique of attacking them in Rock Creek Park around the same time Levy disappeared and an inmate claimed that Guandique confessed to the murder.
Susan Levy believes that regardless of what information is brought out with these new proceedings, it won’t bring her daughter back. “No matter what goes on, our daughter is dead. It doesn’t really matter except that they got the right person,” she said.
Guandique has maintained his innocence and his lawyers have accused the prosecution of withholding information.
