Life is heating up for The Night Shift, both in an out of the ER.

The first hour of the two-part season 3 premiere will air tonight, but the San Antonio Memorial gang won't be back together again until episode 3. As Drew (Brendan Fehr) attempts to adjust to life outside a war zone in "The Way Back," a racially charged shooting will pit friend against friend during "Three-Two-One."

"Drew returns from deployment in Afghanistan and can't seem to shake off the stress of being back from overseas. Things get crazy right away as he, Jordan (Jill Flint) and Kenny (JR Lemon) treat a bride (Lindsey Morgan, "The 100") and her wedding party who have been injured during the festivities, as well as her father, whose presence is not making things easier," NBC said of episode 3, which will air on June 15. "Meanwhile, TC (Eoin Macken) helps Topher (Ken Leung) entertain his demanding mother, whose extended visit is putting stress on the family."

A week later, tensions in San Antonio will boil over following a deadly shooting.

"As the city erupts in violence over an impending jury verdict, the night shift becomes ground zero when they have to take in the man suspected of the racially-motivated shooting at the source of the unrest," NBC teased. "His presence in the emergency room sparks sharp conversation and disagreements among the staff over the highly-charged topic and even close friends Kenny (JR Lemon) and Paul (Robert Bailey Jr.) find themselves at odds."

The Night Shift will certainly hit upon some hot-button topics, and that's just in the first four episodes alone! Reunite with TC and the rest of the ER staff when the series' joins the NBC summer lineup Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET starting on June 1.
