With the recent success of HBO's breakout series True Detective, rumors have been building as to who will star in the show's second season. Speculation has been broad, from serious possibilities to a Twitter flurry of parody suggestions. Everyone has something to say about who deserves the screen time.

While many had hoped to see Jessica Chastain (The Help, The Killing Fields) as the next lead, the star has publicly denied casting rumors. Series creator Nic Pizzolatto recently confirmed her statements, telling To The Best of Our Knowledge on Tuesday that casting has not yet been determined, though it will begin soon.

Pizzolatto did, however, confirm a new setting. Unlike Season 1, which centered around two lead characters in Louisiana, the second season will take place in California, following three yet-to-be-cast leads. The possibility of one of those leads being a woman has not been ruled out.

The complicated, contemplative relationship between Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson) captivated audiences in Season 1. With the powerhouse performances given by McConaughey (Mud, Dallas Buyers Club) and Harrelson (Natural Born Killers, The Hunger Games), the expectation for casting in Season 2 has become incredibly high.

While no hints have been dropped, Pizzolatto did discuss the concept of humanity and character with To The Best of Our Knowledge. "The first thing that separates us is our ego, which separates us from the world," he explained, "And makes us think we're all a bunch of different things."

With a creator like Pizzolatto behind the wheel, there's no such thing as a guarantee, but audiences can expect some compelling characters.
