Did a One Direction member inspire Ed Sheeran's hit song Don't? Howard Stern bluntly asked this question to the British singer on Tuesday.

During an appearance on Stern's radio show, Sheeran was asked if a 1D singer was the one who "cheated with" his girl in the same hotel.

"It was a dude from One Direction, right?" Stern asked Sheeran (via E! News). "The papers say a lot of things. I have kept my mouth shut about everything," Sheeran said. "I didn't really come out of that situation upset. I was just pissed off. I just thought it was a bit disrespectful."

The song is largely thought to be about Ellie Goulding who was reportedly romantic with Niall Horan around the same time she was rumored to be with Sheeran.

Although Sheeran didn't answer who it was about, he did admit they were friends and he ended up bringing it into a conversation. "It's a difficult conversation to have," Sheeran said. "He was my mate, so I was just a bit like, 'Umm, not cool.'"

Sheeran also said that he hasn't really talked to his friend since the incident.

Sheeran was reportedly dating Goulding during the 2013 Video Music Awards when they were seen holding hands. "I mean, normal people don't hold hands if they're just friends," Sheeran said at the time. "It was going on. And now it's not."

Horan hasn't had any comment about the subject since Sheeran's interview.
