The U.S. women's soccer team won the gold medal match against Japan, 2-1, on Aug. 9.

This is USA's first soccer win in the 2012 Olympics. Team USA beat every team they paired up with in the London Games, beginning with France on July 25.

USA scored their first goal of the game only eight minutes into the first half by way of Carli Lloyd. She also scored her team's second goal during the second half. The 30-year-old scored the winning goal that got her team the gold medal against Brazil in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and during the Olympic qualifying round, she tied in first place for the team lead in goals scored with a total of six.

Japan's only score of the match was done by Yuki Ogimi. They went home with the silver and the match was the last women's soccer competition of the 2012 Olympics.

The U.S. holds more all-time soccer medals than any other country ever to participate in the Olympics. They have six in total with 3 of them being gold.

Team USA's captain, Christie Rampone, is the oldest and longest tenured player on the national team as well as the only mother on the team, according to NBC. She has a 6-year-old and a 2-year-old.
