Cox, who plays Sophia Burset on the Netflix dramedy, appeared on the cover of Essence this month with her costars Danielle Brooks (who plays Taystee), Adrienne C. Moore (Black Cindy), Uzo Aduba (Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" Warren), Samira Wiley (Poussey) and Vicky Jeudy (Janae).

For the cover story, Cox described how she ultimately learned to love herself and her body.

"This is intense, and it's hard," she admitted. "What I've been doing is looking in the mirror and listing all the things I have an issue with and then saying, 'This is beautiful.' I just go down the list and tell myself, 'You have to accept that this is you today.' I make time to do this."

Meanwhile, Aduba revealed that she did not truly appreciate her smile until she was an adult.

"For the majority of my first 18 years, I hated my gap," she said, referring to her front teeth. "My mom would tell me that in Nigeria, it's a sign of beauty. I was like, 'We're in Massachusetts.' Today there's not a selfie or personal photo I take where I'm not smiling wide. It sometimes feels as if I'm making up for lost smiles."

Aduba, Cox and the rest of their OITNB costars have plenty of reason to smile, receiving widespread critical acclaim and adoration from fans. Cox was nominated for an Emmy last year, becoming the first openly transgender person to be nominated for an acting category. Aduba was nominated in the same category and managed to win the Emmy.

All of these ladies will return for season 3 of Orange Is the New Black on Friday, June 12 on Netflix.
